Empowering Women Through Health, Awareness and Self-Reliance
As part of Project Garhwal Manthan, First Step Foundation, with the support of CSR Times, initiated a community awareness programme at Gram Sabha Lakhwoli, Pokhra Block, Uttarakhand, on 11 July 2024. The project is ongoing, with a continued focus on improving the well-being and socio-economic empowerment of women in rural communities.
The initiative focuses on promoting women’s health, personal hygiene and menstrual health awareness while encouraging women to become more informed, confident and self-reliant.

A total of 15 women participated in the initial programme. The sessions aim to create awareness about important aspects of women’s well-being, including:
- Understanding menstrual health and maintaining proper menstrual hygiene.
- Breaking social stigma, myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation.
- Understanding the importance of personal hygiene and sanitation.
- Raising awareness about women’s health and preventive healthcare.
- Encouraging women to seek timely medical advice and prioritize their well-being.
- Promoting self-employment opportunities and economic independence.
The project also addresses the challenges faced by women in rural hill communities, particularly limited livelihood opportunities and migration from villages. Women are encouraged to explore self-employment opportunities and become active contributors to their families and communities.
